Some Types of Service Dogs and What They Do

A service dog is any dog whose job it is to assist people. Many people who want a pet dog or a service dog think that they are looking for a new member of the family. This isn’t really the case. Some service dogs do actually do some of the things that a family pet can do, but they may do better than what you can do. Service dogs do a lot of the things that people with disabilities need to do such as changing sheets, carrying groceries, fetching the mail, etc.

There are several types of dogs that are trained to do work for people who are blind, disabled or have hearing impairments. They are often called dog helpers. There are five breeds of dogs that come with training to do these jobs. The following types of dogs can do the things that you want them to do.

Swedish Hound

There is a dog breed called the Swedish hound which is used to hunt and deliver groceries to its master. There are Swedish hounds that do the work of a police dog. They can find and pinpoint a scent. The dog needs to be trained to find a scent when its owner is away from the house. Its name comes from the country where it was bred and made into.

Labradors

This dog has a strong working instinct and is the easiest dog to train. Labs are used to locate people trapped inside a building, the ocean, tunnels and other places that humans can’t easily get to. Sometimes they’re also used to find missing people.

Bichons

Bichons are used to retrieve lost keys, bottles and other things that humans can’t get too easily. It’s the dog that’s the best for kids who need a pet that will bark when they have to go to the washroom.

Rottweiler

Dogs used to assist disabled people are a perfect choice. They’re not too aggressive and won’t try to chase after people when they slip up. They’ll just sit next to them and wait for them to do their thing. A Rottweiler is most suitable for older people who don’t need the energy and noise that a spayed Lab is capable of.

Schnauzers

Schnauzers have strong hunting instincts and can sniff out people trapped in places that are hard to get to. This dog is more suited to the hunter. They’re also a very good family pet, they have a gentle nature, and it’s not the dog that needs to be trained the most.

This isn’t to say that Labs and Rottweilers won’t get bored or that Rottweiler dogs won’t fight with Schnauzers. This is just an explanation of why they can be different. There are different breeds that are best for certain purposes.
