Some dog training tools are great, others not so much. If you’ve got a dog that won’t listen to you, you can always hit your head against a wall to shut him up. We all know that doesn’t work. What would you do if your dog did what you asked, but every time you hit your head? That is exactly what your dog wants you to do. He wants you to be the bad guy in his eyes. A dog is loyal to his masters. He will always be loyal to you. A dog trained to listen and obey needs no punishment. You will get the respect you deserve from your dog.
If you have a dog who is a difficult dog to train, you have just taken on an important task. You need to understand your dog, as well as the reason he is so difficult to train. There are some things to look out for. Most dogs can be trained relatively easily, but there are a few who are beyond repair. The biggest mistake I’ve made in this department is assuming that my dog was simple. If you are starting with a dog that is beyond the basics, you are in for a fight.
I’ve had dogs that were so challenging that I didn’t even get a reward for finishing the task. The rewards were nonexistent. In our house that wasn’t a problem. My dog was a lot more complex than that. The fight happened when I would finish what I started, and he would just keep going. I would tell him off for what he was doing, he would tell me off for telling him off, and we’d go back to doing the same old thing over and over.
That is where the rewards became irrelevant. It was an exercise in futility to keep him focused on the task at hand. I had to learn to keep him on duty, and if I could do that, he was happy to do it over and over again.
You can train a dog. If you make a mistake, make a mistake only as the reward is supposed to be the success of your dog. If you reward him for mistakes, you are encouraging him to repeat the mistake. This is a very hard lesson to learn, but I believe you will do it. I believe it is much easier to train a dog than it is to train an adult. Why? Because an adult will have made a mistake already, and have built up some tolerance. The dog has not.
I hope I have made it clear that what I am talking about is training a dog. For training an adult, you would need to be trained. You’d be doing your dog a favor.
I don’t own an adult dog. If I did, I would have trained him at a young age. You’d need to be trained to handle adult dog behavior, and I don’t think I could handle it. I do own a small breed dog though, and she and I became good friends. I still play with her all the time, and sometimes she brings friends.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this. I believe that it is very important to have your dog read. It helps them to develop their thinking, it develops your relationship with your dog. If you can do this with your dog, and for them, it will be well worth it.
